Your customers search, read and talk in more than one language. Your marketing should too.

Why bilingual matters

In Ranipet district, customers move between Tamil and English within a single conversation. Many search in English because it is quicker to type, others search in Tamil script, and some write Tamil in English letters. If your business appears in only one form, you miss part of the audience.

On Google

  • Business name: use your registered name exactly as it appears on your board. Do not stuff keywords into the name, as Google can suspend profiles for it.
  • Description: write it in clear English first, then add a Tamil version of the key lines so Tamil searchers see familiar words.
  • Services and products: list items in the names customers use. If people say a product name in Tamil, include it.
  • Posts and photo captions: alternate between languages, or write short bilingual captions.
  • Reviews: reply in the language the customer used. See our reply templates.

On WhatsApp

Set your greeting and away messages in both languages so a customer immediately feels understood. In your catalogue, use clear item titles in English with Tamil in the description, or the reverse if your customers prefer it. Keep quick replies short and polite, and write them yourself rather than pasting machine translation. See the catalogue guide.

On signage and print

Choose which language leads and keep it consistent on the board, visiting card and bill. Use a proper Tamil font that renders correctly in print, and give your printer the final vector artwork rather than a screenshot. Large signboards read best with fewer words, so keep the main name big and put details smaller. See signage and brand consistency.

Simple rules

  1. Write for a person, not a translator. Short sentences read well in both languages.
  2. Do not paste raw machine translation into public listings. Ask a fluent speaker to check it.
  3. Use Unicode Tamil text rather than images of text, so search engines and screen readers can read it.
  4. Keep your name, phone number and address identical in both languages wherever possible.
  5. Check how your Tamil text looks on an older Android phone before you publish.

Have a fluent speaker review any text before it goes on a signboard or public listing. A small mistake in print is expensive to correct.

Frequently asked questions

Should my Google business name be in Tamil or English?

Use the name as it is registered and shown on your signboard. Add the other language in your description, services and posts rather than in the name field.

Is it fine to write Tamil in English letters?

It is common in casual messages, but for public listings, use proper Tamil script or clear English so both search and customers understand you.

Can I use machine translation?

Use it only as a first draft. Always have a fluent speaker review before publishing.
