Website speed on mobile networks: what actually matters for local customers
Most local customers reach you on a phone, often on a variable connection. A fast page wins the visit.
Why speed matters
A visitor who taps a link on a phone decides quickly whether to wait. On a variable mobile connection, heavy pages feel slower and many visitors leave before they see your phone number. Speed also influences how search engines treat your site, so a fast page helps in two ways.
The targets to aim for
Google publishes three Core Web Vitals and the thresholds it considers good:
| Metric | What it measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How quickly the main content appears | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page responds to taps | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the layout jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
Practical fixes
Images
- Resize images to the size they are shown. A phone does not need a very large photo.
- Use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- Load images below the first screen lazily, and give every image a width and height so the page does not jump.
Fonts
- Use one or two font families and only the weights you need.
- Host fonts on your own domain and preload the main ones to avoid waiting on another server.
- Make sure text shows immediately with a fallback font while custom fonts load.
Scripts and plugins
- Remove plugins and tracking scripts you do not use.
- Load chat widgets and maps only when needed.
- Keep your own scripts small and avoid heavy libraries for simple tasks.
Hosting and caching
- Serve pages from a content delivery network so they travel a shorter distance.
- Cache static files for a long time and version them when they change.
- Enable compression, and keep HTTPS on.
How to test
Run your address through Google’s PageSpeed Insights and check the mobile result first. Then test on a real mid-range phone over mobile data, not only on fast office Wi-Fi. If you use WordPress, a clean theme and fewer plugins usually help more than any single optimisation trick. Our on-page and technical SEO and WordPress development services start with this kind of audit.
Design for slow networks
- Put your business name, what you do, your town and a call or WhatsApp button on the first screen.
- Keep forms short. Ask for a name and a phone number first.
- Make buttons large enough to tap with a thumb.
- Test the page with images off, to see whether the message still works.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good load time for a local business site?
Aim for the main content to appear within about two and a half seconds on a mobile connection, which matches Google’s good LCP threshold.
Do I need a CDN?
It helps, especially for visitors far from your server. Many modern hosts include one.
Will a faster site improve my Google ranking?
Speed is one of many signals, and its main benefit is keeping visitors who would otherwise leave.
